European community directive 94/9/ce applies to all equipments and protective systems intended to be used in potentially explosive  atmospheres.
Among news are the introduction of essential security requirements such as, suitability to material for mines and surfaces, equipments classification  in categories according to different protection level, and surveillance  on production based on certified standards.
The directive highlights for the 1st time explosion risks induced by mechanical source, such as contact sparks, use or overheating of mechanical components not only electrical.
Additionally the directive implies a precise evaluation  of possible presence of potentially explosive atmosphere, for gas, vapours or flammable mists ( zones 0. 1 and 2) and combustible  dust. ( zones 20, 21 and 22).
